Magnolia Speech School seeks Executive Director

February 7, 2012

On behalf of the Board of Directors of Magnolia Speech School, and specifically the Board’s Executive Director Search Committee, we are asking for your help in identifying potential candidates for the position of Executive Director of the Magnolia Speech School.   At the end of 2011, Magnolia Speech School’s Board reluctantly accepted a retirement request of its long time Executive Director, Mrs. Anne Sullivan, effective at the end of 2012. Mrs. Sullivan has contributed 32 years of outstanding service to the school, region and state on behalf of children with hearing loss and language disorders, and we are seeking an individual who can not only carry on this legacy of service, but also advance the role of Magnolia Speech School.

Magnolia Speech School is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of professionals in the community who volunteer their time, efforts and resources to the program. The Executive Director is the school’s chief administrative officer and is responsible for the educational, clinical, financial, business and developmental operations of the school. Currently, the school administers its services at the main campus, physically located at 733 Flag Chapel Road in Jackson, Mississippi.  The school has an affiliation agreement with the University of Mississippi Medical Center due to their having one of the largest cochlear implant programs in the southeast United States.  The school is also associated with the Early Oral Intervention Program of the University of Southern Mississippi

Magnolia Speech School Website

Our website will provide a potential candidate with the core philosophy and focus of the School. We encourage any interested candidate to review the School’s website at www.magnoliaspeechschool.org .

Qualifications

Candidates for the Executive Director position should possess a background that includes an understanding of the educational and developmental issues associated with hearing loss and language disorders, an ability to manage and direct a large staff of teachers, audiologists, speech pathologists, and other professionals, an appreciation of the basic business operations of an educational institution, and the ability to effectively communicate within an educational, professional and political sphere.

Responsibilities

Click here for a document listing the chief responsibilities of the Executive Director but generally, the chief responsibilities involve being the public face of the school, establishing the vision and goals for the school, fund-raising and administrative oversight of the school.

Selection Procedure and Timeframe

The Executive Director Search Committee has established a procedure and timeline for the selection and retainage of a new Executive Director. This process is intended to be flexible and evolving to allow for theMSSBoard to select and retain an outstanding candidate to fill the position.

The key procedural steps and timelines are as follows:

Distribute Request for Indications of Interest – 01 February 2012

Receive and Evaluate Indications of Interest/Resumes’ – 4 week period

(Cutoff will be late February/early March 2012)

Review Period – 2 weeks (early March 2012)

Shortlist Chosen and Notified – mid March 2012

Interview Period – 2 weeks (mid to late March 2012)

Selection and Negotiation Period – 2 weeks (late March – mid April 2012)

Executive Director Selection Target – mid April 2012

This aggressive schedule is intended to allow the Magnolia Speech School to have an interim Executive Director in place in Jackson at the earliest possible time. The Board anticipates the likelihood of a paid “shadowing” period, beginning in early August 2012, where the new Executive Director would “shadow” Anne Sullivan during the last five months of 2012.  We believe this will provide for a smooth transition into the 2013 calendar year.

Interested Candidates should provide a letter of interest and résumé, via email, to Mrs. Donna Kaye Byrd at dk916@bellsouth.net. Candidates selected to move into the next phase of selection may be asked to fill out a written Application for further evaluation, prior to the interview process.

Questions can be directed to Mrs. Byrd at 601-594-7202.

Letters of Interest and Resumes’ should be sent by 29 February 2012 to be considered.

Although the Board is saddened by the retirement of Anne Sullivan, we are encouraged at the continuing purpose, focus and longevity of Magnolia Speech School. We are looking for an individual who will grasp the historical role that Magnolia Speech School has played in the community and throughout the State of Mississippi, and elevate its potential to even new heights.

Sincerely,

Magnolia Speech School

Board of Directors

Charles R. Alexander, AIA

Board President – 2012
