Wednesday, January 13, the Mississippi Senate voted to give Governor Barbour the authority he requested to make additional budget cuts. If passed, the Governor will be allowed to cut the budgets of agencies of his choosing by up to 10%. Currently the Governor is not allowed to cut agencies by more than 5% until he has cut all agencies by 5%. The Governor is proposing an additional $96 million in cuts to K-12 Education, which will bring the total education budget cuts to 8.7%. The Governor is still exempting the National Board Supplement for teachers from budget cuts. Until now the NBC supplements have been spared, and will continue to be spared if this plan is implemented.
